Managing Expectations: The Key to Fulfilment

Last week, we agreed that fulfilment is the awareness, pursuit, and realisation of your essence, which is described by conscious and subconscious interactions with your inspirations and aspirations. According to the Collins Dictionary, expectations are firm hopes or beliefs that something will happen or you will get something you want.

Expectations can be a desire personally entertained or a consideration externally reinforced. They can also be something others have subtly impressed or militantly foisted on you. But regardless of their origin, you have the power to define and redefine them. This ability is at the heart of Fulfilment. The attainment of expectations is a landmark on the journey of Fulfilment. Unrealised and unrealisable expectations are some of the most significant sources of dissatisfaction and unhappiness among people, but by redefining them, you can regain control and find satisfaction.

The beauty of expectation is that, as you anticipate or desire specific outcomes, you mentally factor that same outcome into the picture you hold of your future, and it tends to fertilise the hope and beauty in tomorrow. Many of our expectations fall into place. But as with everything in life, some expectations do not fall in place or materialise. This might be due to the fact that the expectation is presently beyond one’s reach and may require more time, more resources, more resourcefulness, or additional preparation. Understanding and patience are key in these situations.

As time passes, it’s essential to revisit and review our expectations. We need to determine whether they are still within our reach or have become unrealistic. Ultimately, we must decide what expectations should remain on our life checklist and which ones should be let go.

What matters is for you to consider if such an expectation is central to your attainment of Fulfillment. Secondly, weigh the opportunity cost of holding on to or attaining such expectations and determine the burden that such unmet expectations might constitute to your psyche. Then consider if you are content, even without attaining such an expectation. Finally, the consequences or the implications of retaining or jettisoning such expectations should be established. This process of self-reflection is crucial in managing expectations and achieving Fulfilment.

As we discussed in the first episode, the concept of fulfilment is deeply personal and unique to each individual. It’s all about how you define it. I look forward to continuing this journey with you next week.

  1. Very good job, I agree with the line of thought. God bless you and more grace and wisdom for greater exploits in Jesus mighty name amen

  2. Very commendable piece.
Fulfillment may not always come from attaining expectations. While some expectations may not be attained (due to many reasons – within or without one’s control), the efforts put into the process can give you satisfaction; especially, for lessons learnt from the journey. And the journey is a continuous one.
    More inspirations sir.
